Last Sunday’s event was nothing short of sensational. As someone who is blind, the opportunity to get behind the wheel and experience the thrill of driving around the Sandown track is something that simply cannot be put into words. It is an experience filled with excitement, freedom, confidence, and pure joy, and it is only possible because of your incredible commitment and generosity.

Thank you to every single person who helped make In the Driver’s Seat happen this year. It’s much bigger than just another community event. For one amazing day each year, you give us back a little piece of our independence, a huge boost to our confidence and memories that will stay with us until the next time we get back in the driver’s seat.

I lost my ability to drive due to vision loss over 18 years ago and have found that the hardest part of being, as I am now, legally blind.
It’s amazing how much self esteem you can lose when you’re not able to do something that you took for granted for so long. In The Driver’s Seat gave that back to me last year for my first drive and this July 5 when I was a participant or should I say a VIP.
Being behind the wheel again was such a huge buzz for me. It took at least 48 hours to come down from and it kept me smiling for days. My fingers are crossed that I get the opportunity to drive again in 2027 but until then I’ll be satisfied by the memories I have of my latest drive this July.
I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to you and everyone in Lions Club, Vision Australia, my instructor Marcus Cometti and everyone else who put so much effort into making this program such a huge success.
